Las Palmas - Gran Canaria

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as one of our numerous partner universities offers our students the possibility of studying abroad within the Erasmus+ programme for one semester.

The main aim of my trip to Gran Canaria was to intensify and improve the cooperation between the University College of Teacher Education Vienna and the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. As planned and expected I could use the days to get to know our partners of the International Department at the Faculdad de Ciencias de la Education on the Obelisco Campus personally.

Discussions with responsible coordinators enabled me to get a picture of the faculty and also a better insight into the on-site system which differs from ours in many respects.Furthermore, I gained a more accurate overview of the variety of possibilites offered to our students by the Faculdad de Ciencias, and was really pleasantly surprised by the diversity and flexibility which demands a certain degree of independence but at the same time also promotes.

Following the experience of our two students on site, I also took the opportunity to uncover ambiguities, discuss difficulties, draw up improvement suggestions and implement them in cooperation with the responsible persons for the future in order to counteract problems. However, fortunately the positive experience reports prevailed.

The clocks tick differently on Gran Canaria and also the financial and personal possibilities are limited, but the responsible persons try hard to support our students. I found my visit very profitable because it gave us the staff of the International Office, a better insight into the conditions there and thus enabled us to optimize our cooperation.

Meeting our Spanish colleagues in person was for us, the employees of the International Office advantageous for it broadens mutual understanding and thus simplifies future cooperation. Gran Canaria offers our students the opportunity of spending a varied semester under unusual study conditions in a southern flair, surrounded by wide dunes, beautiful beaches, small fishing villages and picturesque old towns, and thus seeing the world more openly.
