I visited the Department of Education of the Vytautas Magnus University within the Teaching Mobility of the Erasmus+ programme between 23rd and 26th April 2019.
On the 24th of April, I visited the university’s International Office and discussed the study possibilities for international students offered by the university college in Vienna and in Vilnius respectively with Mrs. Jurgita Mickevičiūtė and one of her colleagues. After that I proceeded to visit the lectures given by Prof. Daiva Jakavonyte-Staskuviene to future primary level teachers. The students were most interested in the teacher education in Austria, in particular the primary teacher education at the University College of Teacher Education Vienna, as well as in the Austrian education system. This led to an active exchange on similarities and differences in the teacher education between the two education systems. The session ended with the introduction to our International Programme for incomings students.
On Friday, the 26th of April, I had the pleasant opportunity to accompany Prof. Palmira Pečiuliauskienė during her seminars attended by the students of school management. They were interested in the Austrian education system too. Further topics that we managed to discuss were education standards, competence-oriented teaching and standardized tests in Austria. This arose a lively discussion on the Lithuanian and Austrian education system, too. The students were surprised especially by the fact that in Austria, pupils proceed to either secondary school (Mittelschule) or general secondary school (allgemeinbildende höhere Schule) after the 4th school year already. In Lithuania, pupils make this decision only after the 10th school year.
I returned to Vienna on Saturday.
To conclude, this exchange has been an enormous enrichment for me thanks to the students and teachers.
